Fatimazohra Serri

At just 26 years old, artist Fatima Zohra Serri is breaking taboos about the status of women and using her camera to highlight the inequalities between men and women in Moroccan Muslim culture.

Born into a conservative family on the northern coast of Nador, the 26-year-old photographer is part of Noorseen, a collective of 14 emerging Moroccan image-makers who are challenging traditional narratives.

Fatima Zohra Serri presents the Arab woman in a position of power, with fishnet stockings, lipstick and other attributes that could be considered "provocative". Morocco is often seen as one of the most progressive countries for women's rights in the Middle East and North Africa region, but women in the country still face economic inequality, patriarchal laws and taboos about their bodies and sexuality.

Her photographs are as actual as bold, reconsidering the position of women in Moroccan society, and questioning inherited traditions in relation to the body, the veil, and the domestic space.
